"Foreign Workers Flock to Equatorial Guinea" paints the image of the young petroleum industry and the growth of a developing nation while also noting the numerous human rights violations committed by President Obiang Nguema. Although Equatorial Guinea has arisen to have the highest GDP of any African country, concerns arise to the detriments the people suffer as little benefit actually reaches the common man from such a profitable industry. Furthermore, in the over thirty year reign of the current president multiple abuses of labor have occurred to the poor workforce of the country.
The abuses of the Equatoguinean government are often directed toward any ethnic group outside the Fang tribe, thus, creating unfortunate circumstances for other tribes. The vast majority of work done for the petroleum industry also occurs on the main island of Bioko Island, home to the Fangs, which only asks for greater trouble from suppressed mainland ethnicities; however, the high GDP does indicate a hopeful future for the Equatoguinean economy. President Obiang Nguema's actions are likely to only continue with the oppression of non-Fang ethnicities. These oppressive policies with growing access to money within the country may lead to a revolt and civil war from the weak mainland tribes, thus, creating a struggle for cultural dominance within the country as well as a struggle for economic dominance. If such cultural struggles occur, genocide, ethnic cleansing, and a bloody revolution in the name of tribal culture may occur. |
