"'The Americans Lied': Trans-Atlantic 'No-Spy' Deal on the Rocks" discusses current issues the German government has with claims of U.S. spying and attempts at resolving the issue. The article's main focus lies on resolution issues such as talks between American and German officials at ending spying. Also, it discusses the possible implications for Chancellor Merkel if attempts fail such as failure in reelection or early removal from office. As well, issues of possible methods to resolve the spying problem by talks between Merkel and Obama or between BND and NSA heads are discussed.
The acts of the American government seem quite invasive as through the eyes of a German, and the American government as a whole also seems rather stubborn and aggravating due to its unwillingness to comply with treaties. The German media's distaste toward portions of Merkel's performance does make me generally feel better about the American media's treatment of politicians. However, the propagation of anti-U.S. feelings makes me a bit sad.
The U.S. spying may very well lead to the leaking of German government secrets, which may compromise their legitimacy to the German people. Also the possibility of failed compromises with the American government may hurt Merkel's future position as chancellor and may cost her the remaining time in her term of office. Either possibility would hurt strength of the German government, and the removal of Merkel may cause less foreign trust in Germany due to their own lack of trust in their chosen leaders.
