"Nazi Shazam" discusses the current attempts of the German police to curb the growing strength of the far-right party (Neo-Nazi party). The recruitment of German youth to the party has become prevalent through use of music advocating the party. The police are currently developing a program similar to the smartphone app Shazam, which would identify Neo-Nazi music to determine if surveillance or other forms of action need be taken within an area to slow the party.
Now such a device would seem to infringe upon rights and oppress the German people; however, given the violence and hatred caused by the far-right party, I find such actions to be justified. Danger fills Germany as long as many of these far-right party members remain active in their attempts to kill and terrorize the German people. If allowed to continue, they may cause the society of Germany to revert to the dangerous racism filled times of Nazi fascism. If the police are able to succeed in their goal of curbing Neo-Nazism with such a venture, it could very well lead to the preservation of modern as well as pre-World War traditional German culture. For a return to Nazism would cause the oppression the German people once felt under Hitler's regime to arise, and such oppression limits possibly the greatest growth to any culture, free expression. |
